Doras' statement regarding the recent events in Saggart, Co Dublin

Doras are appalled at the reported attack on a child in Saggart in Co. Dublin on Monday night. We are concerned about the wellbeing of the victim, and we hope she gets the care and supports she needs.

The matter is now before the courts, where we expect that justice will be served.

We condemn the violence witnessed outside Citywest and the targeting of people seeking protection in Ireland following the attack. A tragic incident is being exploited by some bad actors to push a hateful and divisive agenda.

People’s anger and pain is being weaponised, and entire groups are being scapegoated for the actions of one individual.

We remind those who are targeting asylum seekers that they are putting other innocent people at risk. Everyone’s safety and wellbeing must be protected, including the families and individuals in Citywest.

We commend the Gardaí for their role in limiting the violence last night, and we call on everyone in a position of influence to act responsibly and to do everything in their power to restore calm.

Politicians and community leaders need to reject hate and division, and to promote shared values of belonging, trust, and solidarity.

We also call for responsible reporting and commentary on the incident to avoid further division and hate in our communities.

Finally, we call for better protections for all children, particularly those in the care of the State.
