Who we are

The name Doras, which means door in the Irish language, was chosen to symbolise an open door, welcoming new communities to Limerick and Ireland, and as an acronym for Development Organisation for Refugees and Asylum Seekers.

Since its foundation, Doras has evolved from being exclusively Limerick-based to one that now combines in-person and phone support services with campaigning and advocacy at a national as well as local level. While we are still rooted in communities, many of our projects have national relevance and reach. Our online education platform SaorEd and Migrant Victims Support helpline, are accessed by people all over the country on a daily basis.

As a human rights organisation, we aim to promote and protect the rights of every person, but our work has a particular focus on the rights of migrants. This includes refugees who are forced to flee their homes due to war, conflict, or fear of persecution; international protection applicants who are applying for status as a refugee; and others who chose to move country for reasons such as work, family, or education.

Our vision for Ireland is a society where equality and respect for the human rights of migrants are social norms.

Our mission is to promote and protect the rights of migrants and refugees in Ireland through direct support, awareness raising, and advocacy.

Our ambition is to see everyone in Ireland treated equally, free from intolerance and discrimination and afforded the dignity and respect they deserve.

Statement from the Heart of Doras

To all migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, we recognise the immense challenges you face as you leave behind everything you know and love in search of safety, hope, and a better life. The journey you have embarked upon, filled with uncertainty, fear, and discrimination, requires immense courage and resilience. As fellow human beings and people who fundamentally believe in the importance of human rights for all, we recognise the importance of empathy and compassion as a lifeline.

By supporting, empowering, and working hand in hand with migrants, we embrace your unique stories and your unwavering spirit and determination. Our vision for Ireland is a society where equality and respect for the human rights of migrants are social norms. Our mission is to promote and protect the rights of migrants and refugees in Ireland through direct support, awareness raising, and advocacy. We work hard to see a world where acceptance triumphs over racism and where the inherent worth of every human being is acknowledged.

Each migrant carries a tapestry woven with threads of courage, strength, and dreams of a brighter tomorrow. Together, we build bridges instead of walls, we shine light in the darkest corners, and we open doors that were once shut. Together, we unlock our own humanity and foster a relationship of reciprocity, where giving and receiving become intertwined. Through this mutual support, we create a kinder, more inclusive, and beautiful world.

At Doras, we wholeheartedly welcome you to Ireland and invite everyone to join us in supporting migrants and refugees. In a time when more and more people are being displaced globally due to climate change, war, and political and socio-economic reasons, our collective efforts can forge powerful alliances. Together, we can journey towards a future of unity, creative solutions, and endless possibilities.

To our supporters, funders, and volunteers, we thank you for your unwavering support and for standing with us as we strive to create a world where every migrant and refugee is embraced, empowered, and valued.

Six reasons it is vital to support Migrants and Refugees and how it benefits our society to do so

1. Preserving Dignity and Human Rights:

Every individual, regardless of their origin or circumstances, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. By supporting migrants and refugees, we reaffirm our commitment to the inherent worth and rights of every human being. It is our duty to advocate for their safety, protection, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives free from fear and persecution.

2. Compassion in Action:

Compassion knows no borders, and extending a helping hand to those in need is an embodiment of our highest ideals. By supporting migrants and refugees, we show empathy towards their struggles, recognising the courage it takes to leave behind everything familiar in pursuit of safety and a brighter future. Our compassion can provide solace, restore hope, and serve as a beacon of light amidst their darkest hours.

3. Building Inclusive Societies:

Diversity enriches the tapestry of humanity, and by embracing migrants and refugees, we celebrate the strength of our shared experiences. Their unique perspectives, cultures, and talents contribute to the vibrancy and dynamism of our societies. By fostering inclusivity and creating spaces for integration, we build stronger, more resilient communities that thrive on the collective strength of all its members.

4. Economic and Social Contributions:

Migrants and refugees have the potential to be powerful agents of positive change. They bring skills, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit that contribute to the growth of economies and the advancement of societies. By supporting their integration, we unlock their potential, allowing them to become active participants in our communities and contributing to the shared prosperity of all.

5. Education and Empowerment:

Education is a transformative force, and by providing educational opportunities to migrants and refugees, we empower them to rebuild their lives and contribute meaningfully to society. Education opens doors, enhances skills, and fosters a sense of purpose. It equips individuals with the tools needed to overcome adversity and become catalysts for change in their own lives and communities.

6. Addressing Global Challenges:

In a world grappling with complex issues such as climate change, conflict, and inequality, supporting migrants and refugees is not just a matter of compassion; it is a strategic imperative. By addressing the root causes of displacement, promoting stability, and providing sustainable solutions, we can work towards a more just and equitable world for all, where no one is left behind.

Supporting migrants and refugees offers us an opportunity to recommit ourselves to the timeless values of compassion, justice, and inclusivity. We reaffirm our belief in the power of unity and our responsibility to safeguard the fundamental rights of every human being.
