To mark World Refugee Day, Doras Luimní are organising a number of initiatives and events in Limerick to raise awareness of and support for refugees and migrants.
Events will take place from 15th to 20th June 2015 and include a pop-up café in Central Buildings; a free food and music event in Fitto café, Catherine Street; launch of the around the World in Limerick recipe collection; and more to be announced.
As part of this week-long line-up of events, we are asking our supporters to get involved by hosting a world food fundraiser event at home in support of Doras Luimní and in celebration of the contribution of migrants to cuisine in Limerick.
Hosting a world food fundraising event, step-by-step:
Choose a recipe from around the world. Our recipe collection might give you some ideas but feel free to experiment! Ever tried cooking falafel or a Persian chicken and pomegranite? Why not prepare a curry from Sri Lanka or Bangladesh? The possibilities are endless and can be tailored to your taste. We’ll update Facebook with recipe and meal suggestions over the coming weeks so keep an eye out!
Invite your friends, family or workmates over to your house for dinner. Choose a date that suits, ideally during the week of 15th June but whatever date is convenient for you.
Check the ethnic food shops in Limerick for a wide selection of spices and hard-to-get ingredients. There are a number of ethnic food shops in the city centre located on Catherine Street; Pery Square; Parnell Street and Henry Street.
Ask your dinner guests to contribute a set amount of money for the meal, that will be donated to Doras Luimní in support of our work with refugees and migrants in Limerick. Suggested donations range from €5 per person and upwards: whatever you think is most suitable for your guests. All donations, big and small, are greatly appreciated and make a big difference to our work.
Optional: Send us photographs of your meal and event so that we can publicise the fundraising initiatives on social media and encourage others to join in!
